The records of the Hayden Survey include general letters received, 1864-79; letters received from persons in foreign governments, 1853-79, and from Government agencies, 1867-79; personal letters received, 1853-66 and 1872-79; military records, 1867-74; incomplete files of accounting records, 1872-79; and applications for positions and recommendations, 1872-79. The records of the Powell Survey consist of letters received, 189-79, and letters sent, 1876-79. The records of the King Survey include communications received from the Corps of Engineers and the Treasury Department, 1867-70; letters and reports from King to the Chief of Engineers, 1867-79; and letters from the Engineer Department, 1870-81, and the Treasury Department and the Public Printer, 1870-79. The records of the Wheeler Survey consists solely of the handwritten report PROGRESS REPORT UPON GEOGRAPHICAL AND GEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS AND SURVEYS WEST OF THE 100TH MERIDIAN IN 1872, UNDER THE DIRECTION OF BRIGADIER GENERAL A.A. HUMPHREYS, CHIEF OF ENGINEERS, BY 1ST LIEUTENANT GEORGE M. WHEELER, CORPS OF ENGINEERS, IN CHARGE.

The Geographical Surveys West of the 100th Meridian, also known as the Wheeler Survey, grew out of the Army's desire to create maps featuring the geological aspects of the West, man-made improvements, and the "conformation, obstacles and resources of the country." Wheeler was born in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, the son of John Wheeler and Miriam P. Daniels. He graduated from West Point in 1866, ranked sixth in his class, and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the US Army Corps of Engineers. He first served in California from 1866 to 1871.
